Top 10 Green Blogs Spreading the Word Virally
Eco-friendly, environmentally conscious, change-the-world oriented blogs are popping up every day. As they emerge and grow, several have achieved success by spreading their messages on social media sites like Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, and Yahoo Buzz. Here are 10 who have demonstrated a “viral” essence in achieving social media love.
Green is in, and it’s growing. The Internet, notorious for fostering negativity and depravity, has started to embrace environmental messages in blogs and news websites. As more people become conscious of the efforts, more blogs are created and promoted using the quickest method of putting eyeballs on content: going viral on social media websites.
Here are the top 12 who have achieved social media bliss regularly over the past 3 months. They are regulars on Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon, Yahoo! Buzz, Propeller, and Mixx, as well as the green-niche social media sites like Hugg, MindBodyGreen, and Care2. These sites have a wide range of traffic that they can send to an article, image, or video, but the best ones can send tens of thousands of visitors to a blog.
For many, it is the primary source of traffic. In compiling this list, we will use number of Digg front page stories as the primary indicator. If you can make it on Digg regularly, you can make it anywhere.

Clean Technica

With a ton of traffic and a clear message, CleanTechnica holds the title as the most Dugg green blog over the last several months. The design is clean (and shared with several green blogs) and the titles are conducive for the quick trip to the front page of social media sites.
“Technology inspired by nature and aimed at protecting it, represents one of the hottest developments of the new century. Cleantechnica gives you a fresh, up-to-date perspective on the latest trends. From renewable energy to more efficient electronics and information technology, Cleantechnica introduces readers to the full scope of clean tech in language that doesn’t require an engineering degree.”

Eco Geek
________________________________________________________________________________
With an easy appeal to the social news crowd, EcoGeek has one of the best promotion styles amongst social media sites. It boasts a large number of social media connected members, so even when a story doesn’t hit the front page, it is often able to generate a lot of votes. Most of the stories are spins on other stories from other sources, but the spins themselves are fresh, the titles are sharp, and credit is always given to the original source, making it an ideal blog for those who want to be in touch with everything that is green and geeky.
“Technology can be a force for evil, or for awesome. Those who shun technologies that could save the planet are just as guilty as those who ignore the environment. There’s a safe balance, where the awesome can help nature as much as it helps us have a good time and live easier lives. EcoGeek devotes its pages to exploring the symbiosis between nature and technology. If you’re interested in that, then stop by, and stop by often.”

Gas 2.0
________________________________________________________________________________
Any blog that can take on of the biggest pollution sources in the world, automobiles, and teach us how to “greenify” them deserves as much social media love as possible. The only complaint — not enough stories! They are always intelligently written and the topics are normally interesting. We want more!
“Gas 2.0 digs into the viscous world of biofuels and the fast-paced transit arena, exploring the technologies and substances that will power our transportation future.”

Environmental Graffiti
________________________________________________________________________________
If you enjoy the offbeat angle of environmental blogging, Environmental Graffiti is for you. When you visit, always be ready for a shock of some sort, as their stories strike deep into the issue by pointing out the odd or absurd in the world. Possibly the most fun green blog to read, it also tends to tease with great stories that just don’t come out often enough. If only they could post 4 or 5 a day, that would take up a good chunk of my day reading them.
“Born in May 2007, Environmental Graffiti is an eclectic mix of the most bizarre, funny and interesting environmental news on the planet. We search the vast realms of the internet on behalf of all environmentalists who don’t take themselves too seriously and compile it into a daily blog. Surf and enjoy!”

Eco Worldly

Where Gavin finds his stories, I have no idea, but they are normally extremely important despite being off the mainstream. They are stories that you won’t hear about on Fox News or CNN, but are of value to the world with information that everyone should know. With a style like partner CleanTechnica and a promotion engine that rivals EcoGeek, this is a blog that should continue to get viral love well into the future.
“EcoWorldly brings you news on sustainable successes and ecological failures in other countries that offer lessons for green progress in America. Find perspectives and news on the environmental movement from around the world.”

Greenopolis
________________________________________________________________________________
Passionate. That’s the best word to describe the folks at this relatively-new green social networking site. They use the combined writings of members and a strong group of social media accounts to generate tons of traffic that highlights green causes and issues in the world. The site itself should be noted because the blogging aspect is only a small part of what it offers. Forums, games, reviews, products — an environmentally consious person could spend hours a day exploring this deep site.
“Greenopolis.com is the first “green,” interactive, collaborative, educational website to bring together communities, environmental organizations, universities, foundations and corporations to reward individuals for making incremental positive environmental changes.”

Red Green and Blue
________________________________________________________________________________
The environment is normally considered a scientific topic, but without the politics that drive (or stall) the efforts of science, all of the effort would be futile. That is the point of Red Green and Blue, to focus on the political nature that green issues need for success.
“Red, Green and Blue brings together voices from across the political and ideological spectrums to discuss and debate critical environmental issues and current events.”

The Daily Green
________________________________________________________________________________
Few can boast having the most practical Green blog on the Internet, but that’s exactly what The Daily Green delivers… daily. Their articles and tips are designed for real people to apply to real lives. From proper use of suntan lotion all the way to critical political discussions about Presidential Candidates, the Daily Green does what they need to do to “keep it real”.
“Being eco-friendly and environmentally conscious goes beyond words. The actions that we take in our daily lives have a huge impact on how green we truly are. The Daily Green focuses on these things, offering tips on how to live, what to buy, where to go, and generally how to live a greener life. The quality of the content is absolutely amazing. I had gone to the country to live. After years of the media wars in Manhattan, I was ready to raise heirloom roses in my organic garden. And to volunteer. It was that kind of time. But then the climate in my garden began to change. And then I saw An Inconvenient Truth. And then one day, my husband Peter said, “Honey, somebody ought to invent a great green website for regular people.” So, welcome to TheDailyGreen.com.”

Have you ever wanted to see a lamp made out of used straws? A chair made out of old tires? How about a dress that was produced carbon neutral? If you are looking for “practical” applications of various items in your world, look no further than Inhabitat. While some of the features are often out of the reach for most people, they are still brilliant, interesting reads, and can spark ideas on how to apply these concepts to reality. A must read for any eco-friendly individual.
“Inhabitat.com is a weblog devoted to the future of design, tracking the innovations in technology, practices and materials that are pushing architecture and home design towards a smarter and more sustainable future.”

WebEcoist
________________________________________________________________________________
Despite being relatively new, it has already made a splash on the web and across social media sites. With a strong, experienced editorial team leading the way, WebEcoist promises to make a huge splash in the green blogging world.
“What is the green movement? The green movement as we think of it today has evolved considerably since the early days. Since there are some popular assumptions about environmental history that are incorrect, if you have an interest in green issues this article will serve as a helpful guide to the origins and evolution of “green”. To understand the modern green movement, we have to trace its origins back to the beginning.”
