<description>Although planting trees is generally beneficial for the environment, there are many other carbon reduction projects out there that result in a permanent and quantifiable amount of greenhouse gases being not emitted to the atmosphere.

We have over 90 companies that we work with that have had the greenhouse gas emissions produced by their services, products or whole business calculated and offset. These businesses realise customers are starting to demand green actions from the businesses they purchase products and services from, and are positioning themselves as leaders in the upcoming carbon-constrained economy.

These companies range from one person to thousands and operate across a wide range of sectors of the economy. At present they are mainly Australian businesses, and can be found at http://www.lowco2.com.au.

Purchasing products or services in this directory results in more money being directed from these businesses into energy efficiency, waste diversion and renewable energy projects. All emission savings from these projects are independently verified under interntional standards.</description>

<description>In terms of something like carbon offsetting, I've heard that tree-planting ventures are only short-term fixes to the environmental problem. Anyone know if this is true? A company like http://www.offsetters.com has some neat projects going on that restore marshes, which I've heard is more beneficial than planting more trees... Another concern I have, though, is with giving to or buying from these types of organizations - how do I know if they are genuinely interested in helping the environment, or if they are simply greenwashing? (http://carrieanddanielle.com/butterflies-sunflowers-shampoo-green-washing/)

<description>Hunter - thank you for having us on this great list! I was especially happy to see wer'e together there with Blundstone, my favorite boots ever :-)

Just two quick comments - we don't sell books, but only provide the option to plant trees for them (though we work with almost 30 bookstores which offers customers this option at the store, where they can also receive our sticker on spot. List of bookstores can be found here: http://www.ecolibris.net/bookstores.asp).

second, unfortunately, the number of trees cut down for the production of books sold annually in the U.S. was updated to 30 million. You can find more details about it here - http://ecolibris.blogspot.com/2008/09/numbers-are-going-up-30-million-trees.html.
