Amphibious Limousines, Double-Decker RVs, and More
Interested in discovering the weirdest vehicles ever seen on modern roads? The ones on this list take the cake regarding unusual design.
Some people enjoy driving simple sedans, SUVs, or pickup trucks. For others, it takes something more unusual to get them excited about hitting the open road. Though not all vehicles on this list are road-legal by modern standards, they’re all exciting.
1. The Amphibious Limo
Billionaires buy some strange things, but the amphibious limo is one of the quirkiest designs to cater to the richest people on earth. It’s designed just for the ultra-wealthy, with a starting price of $2 million.
Though countless amphibious vehicles have been produced over the years, and at least a few amphibious limo designs exist, Nouvoyage was the first to turn the ambitious project into a reality.
The Limousine Tender 33 combines technology from the racing industry and the military to create an innovative platform featuring a Yanmar diesel engine and Remy electric motors. It can reach up to 85 mph on land and 30 knots at sea.
2. Double-Decker RV Conversion
The second vehicle on this list began as a double-decker bus and wound up as a two-story RV large enough to fit a family of eight. Owned by the Evelyn family, it features a convertible office, a full kitchen, two bathrooms, and a rooftop patio.
According to the family, including two bathrooms to provide for the six children living in the RV was crucial. They’re independent from the shower, which can be found between the first and second floors on the stairs to provide a taller space. This astonishing RV even has a washer and dryer.
3. Acrimoto FUV
Acrimoto’s Fun Utility Vehicle (FUV) is an electric vehicle with an appearance reminiscent of a three-wheeled motorcycle combined with a Utility Task Vehicle (UTV). Though few people know how to define this unique vehicle, all who have driven it agree that “FUV” is an accurate name.
The FUV is semi-enclosed to offer greater confidence and comfort than your typical motorcycle. However, it’s significantly less comfortable than electric Mercedes cars and other more traditional EVs. The sides remain open so you can feel the wind in your hair at speeds up to 75 mph.
One nice thing about the Acrimoto FUV is that this all-electric vehicle boasted a price tag lower than typical electric vehicles, starting at just $17,900 before subsidies. Unfortunately, new models are no longer being produced, and the company has floated the possibility of bankruptcy.
4. GM Firebird 1 XP-21
Back in 1953, GM designed a truly unique vehicle. The XP-21 Firebird 1 looks more like a jet plane than a car, and it’s got a gas turbine engine to back up the similarities. A “Whirlfire Turbo-Power” engine powered “his jet-propulsion ca” via its rear wheels and transmission.
This unique vehicle produced over 370 hp and had turbine speeds of 13,000 rpm. It was fast and powerful. The biggest problem? It expelled jet fuel at a deeply impractical 1,250 degrees Fahrenheit.
