The Cinderella story has come to a happy ending with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers finishing the journey to become the Super Bowl Champions.
From the start of a season that was mired with COVID-19 issues, no offseason preparations, no pre-season games, and several schedule changes, the Buccaneers have hoisted the Lombardi Trophy and are now Super Bowl LV Champions. The onset of the pandemic is only part of this story.
TB Stands for Tom Brady and not Just Tampa Bay
During the previous offseason, Tom Brady, the quarterback with the most Super Bowl wins became a free agent and signed with the Bucs. This gave us a story that played out all season of whether the success Brady had in New England was more him or his coach Bill Belichick. This seemed to be a story that played out with Tom being Cinderella and Bill the evil stepmother, even if that’s a bit of a stretch.
The Bucs had Trouble Early in the Season
The TampaBay Buccaneers made it into the post-season with an 11-5 record which was good enough to win a Wild Card Spot. This meant they would have to play all their playoff games on the road. The regular season was mired with games where the team didn’t seem to be in sync until they had their bye week during Week 13.
The Super Bowl Champions Turned it On Late in the Season
In much the same way that Patriots players were used to, especially Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, the December and January play of the Bucs was much better than how they played earlier in the year. After losing in Week 12 to the Kansas City Chiefs, the team they would see in the Super Bowl, the Bucs didn’t lose another game.
Going Through Hall of Famers
The road to the Super Bowl for the Buccaneers wasn’t an easy one. First, they faced off with the Washington Football Team and one of the most aggressive defensive teams in the NFL. This was followed by a trip to New Orleans to see Drew Brees and the Saints. Once the Bucs won this game, they had a journey to the Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field to see Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. None of these three games proved to be easy for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Defense Was Phenomenal for the Super Bowl Champions
Most football fans spent the two weeks between the Conference Championship games and the Super Bowl discussing what the result might be. Most thought Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes would be able to overcome the loss of starting offensive linemen, but that wasn’t the case. The Buccaneers defense was in Mahomes face during the entire game, disrupting his plan and making it difficult for him to get the ball downfield.
The Refs Were Too Visible in this Game
While not the reason for the Kansas City Chiefs losing the Super Bowl, the crew that was officiating the game showed a lopsided tendency that favored the Bucs. At halftime, the Bucs had only been penalized one time for five yards while the Chiefs already had more than seventy yards in penalties at this time. Many of the penalties against the Chiefs were untimely and questionable but were not the reason for the loss.
TB12 Was Comfortable
Tom Brady was more than comfortable in the pocket that his offensive line was creating for him. As the game moved along, it was pretty easy to see that Brady was finding his receivers easily and getting the ball out quickly. The same couldn’t be said for his counterpart. Mahomes seemed to be running for his life and his receivers dropped passes at some of the worst times in the game.
The Bucs are Super Bowl Champions
With a final score of 31-9 that was only close in the first quarter, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, led by Tom Brady and a stifling defense, are the Super Bowl LV Champions. This game and run to the championship sealed the story of Brady being the Greatest of All Time (GOAT) in the NFL.
Brady now has seven Super Bowl wins, which is more than any singular organization in the sport. He has connected with Rob Gronkowski on a record number of touchdowns in the postseason, and everyone who scored for the Bucs are players that were not on the team a year ago.
For this year, the story has been written; now we get to talk about what next year might bring and whether or not this will be the final chapter in an amazing story for Tom Brady.
